Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1.46%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 1.55%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 2.06%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which rose 3.73% or 3.94 points to trade at 109.68 at the close. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) added 3.30% or 3.40 points to end at 106.47 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) was up 2.95% or 3.74 points to 130.34 in late trade.
Biggest losers included United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX), which lost 0.82% or 1.06 points to trade at 127.98 in late trade. Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) declined 0.31% or 0.15 points to end at 48.87 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) gained 0.03% or 0.04 points to 141.37.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Newell Brands Inc (NYSE:NWL) which rose 8.19% to 23.52, Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which was up 6.89% to settle at 111.52 and L Brands Inc (NYSE:LB) which gained 6.74% to close at 31.99.
The worst performers were Campbell Soup Company (NYSE:CPB) which was down 3.73% to 39.02 in late trade, United Continental Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:UAL) which lost 3.26% to settle at 91.75 and Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation (NYSE:COG) which was down 2.42% to 24.97 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Tyme Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:TYME) which rose 30.23% to 2.80, Safe-T Group Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:SFET) which was up 29.18% to settle at 5.8000 and Adial Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ADIL) which gained 24.81% to close at 1.66.
The worst performers were Zafgen Inc (NASDAQ:ZFGN) which was down 40.55% to 5.41 in late trade, Mercantil Bank Holding Corp (NASDAQ:AMTBB) which lost 22.58% to settle at 12.00 and Tenax Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:TENX) which was down 19.69% to 2.610 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1964 to 1102 and 82 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1552 rose and 1112 declined, while 75 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 11.56% to 18.90.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.03% or 0.40 to $1228.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 2.42% or 1.22 to hit $51.64 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 2.69% or 1.59 to trade at $60.63 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.09% to 1.1326, while USD/JPY rose 0.53% to 113.57.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.18% at 96.995.
