Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Goods and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.25% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.94%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.03%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 4.73% or 15.85 points to trade at 351.01 at the close. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) added 2.93% or 4.80 points to end at 168.65 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 2.90% or 1.25 points to 44.39 in late trade.
Biggest losers included General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), which lost 4.72% or 0.86 points to trade at 17.35 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 1.86% or 4.81 points to end at 253.65 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 0.48% or 0.81 points to 168.50.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Lam Research Corp (NASDAQ:LRCX) which rose 7.72% to 205.08, Texas Instruments Incorporated (NASDAQ:TXN) which was up 5.53% to settle at 119.16 and KLA-Tencor Corporation (NASDAQ:KLAC) which gained 5.42% to close at 113.49.
The worst performers were Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) which was down 7.06% to 12.18 in late trade, Fastenal Company (NASDAQ:FAST) which lost 5.84% to settle at 52.20 and DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH) which was down 5.29% to 45.45 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Juno Therapeutic (NASDAQ:JUNO) which rose 51.86% to 69.25, Akers Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:AKER) which was up 44.93% to settle at 0.300 and Cenveo Inc (NASDAQ:CVO) which gained 33.64% to close at 1.470.
The worst performers were CounterPath Corp (NASDAQ:CPAH) which was down 26.81% to 4.940 in late trade, Genocea Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:GNCA) which lost 25.00% to settle at 0.810 and Newater Technology Inc (NASDAQ:NEWA) which was down 24.11% to 11.99 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1967 to 1118 and 128 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1612 rose and 916 declined, while 122 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.80% to 11.87 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.62% or 8.30 to $1328.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.28% or 0.18 to hit $63.91 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.19% or 0.13 to trade at $69.28 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.42% to 1.2210, while USD/JPY rose 0.70% to 111.23.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.29% at 90.49.
