Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Consumer Services and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.95%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.47%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 2.30%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which rose 8.89% or 12.20 points to trade at 149.50 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 6.90% or 6.13 points to end at 94.93 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 6.76% or 9.47 points to 149.49 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which lost 8.07% or 4.26 points to trade at 48.55 in late trade. Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) declined 6.73% or 3.02 points to end at 41.83 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) shed 6.00% or 1.94 points to 30.42.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were DXC Technology Co (NYSE:DXC) which rose 33.94% to 12.47, ONEOK Inc (NYSE:OKE) which was up 33.31% to settle at 20.49 and Capri Holdings Ltd (NYSE:CPRI) which gained 33.24% to close at 10.02.
The worst performers were WEC Energy Group Inc (NYSE:WEC) which was down 13.51% to 90.41 in late trade, Consolidated Edison Inc (NYSE:ED) which lost 13.13% to settle at 80.09 and Southwest Airlines Company (NYSE:LUV) which was down 12.20% to 30.86 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Penn Virginia Corporation (NASDAQ:PVAC) which rose 146.02% to 2.78, Select Interior Concepts Inc Class A (NASDAQ:SIC) which was up 138.58% to settle at 3.03 and Dave & Buster’s Entertainment (NASDAQ:PLAY) which gained 76.59% to close at 8.60.
The worst performers were Entasis Therapeutics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:ETTX) which was down 50.54% to 2.75 in late trade, Biontech Se (NASDAQ:BNTX) which lost 35.54% to settle at 59.30 and Acer Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ACER) which was down 31.19% to 1.39 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2223 to 712 and 24 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2133 rose and 598 declined, while 21 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 5.82% to 72.00.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.29% or 4.30 to $1473.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 23.24% or 4.84 to hit $25.67 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.50% or 0.14 to trade at $28.06 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.17% to 1.0672, while USD/JPY rose 0.09% to 110.78.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 2.00% at 103.570.
