Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.93%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.67%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.55%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 4.87% or 4.73 points to trade at 101.92 at the close. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) added 3.93% or 8.36 points to end at 221.17 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) was up 2.62% or 0.78 points to 30.57 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which lost 1.15% or 1.26 points to trade at 108.70 in late trade. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) declined 0.55% or 0.88 points to end at 158.63 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) shed 0.52% or 0.78 points to 148.08.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Newell Brands Inc (NASDAQ:NWL) which rose 11.02% to 9.87, Activision Blizzard Inc (NASDAQ:ATVI) which was up 10.02% to settle at 90.99 and Etsy Inc (NASDAQ:ETSY) which gained 9.18% to close at 93.71.
The worst performers were VeriSign Inc (NASDAQ:VRSN) which was down 5.05% to 213.73 in late trade, Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) which lost 3.04% to settle at 439.39 and Applied Materials Inc (NASDAQ:AMAT) which was down 2.13% to 137.56 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Painreform Ltd (NASDAQ:PRFX) which rose 307.41% to 16.50, Eloxx Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ELOX) which was up 93.86% to settle at 7.58 and Adial Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ADIL) which gained 90.31% to close at 0.38.
The worst performers were SunCar Technology Group Inc (NASDAQ:SDA) which was down 35.50% to 14.01 in late trade, Prestige Wealth Inc (NASDAQ:PWM) which lost 24.92% to settle at 18.92 and Tattooed Chef Inc (NASDAQ:TTCF) which was down 24.76% to 0.16 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2266 to 708 and 90 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2180 rose and 1339 declined, while 154 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.53% to 14.84.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.32% or 6.20 to $1,937.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 2.53% or 1.85 to hit $74.84 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 2.19% or 1.70 to trade at $79.39 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.05% to 1.10, while USD/JPY fell 0.68% to 140.35.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.29% at 101.35.
