Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Technology, Oil & Gas and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.91%, while the S&P 500 index added 1.08%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.30%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 4.13% or 1.94 points to trade at 48.92 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 1.98% or 1.68 points to end at 86.35 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) was up 1.98% or 1.00 points to 51.43 in late trade.
Biggest losers included UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which lost 1.69% or 3.89 points to trade at 226.73 in late trade. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) declined 0.80% or 0.29 points to end at 35.83 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) shed 0.69% or 0.60 points to 86.05.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were PVH Corp (NYSE:PVH) which rose 9.13% to 81.08, IPG Photonics Corporation (NASDAQ:IPGP) which was up 6.34% to settle at 124.69 and General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) which gained 5.64% to close at 8.80.
The worst performers were Tyson Foods Inc (NYSE:TSN) which was down 7.75% to 86.06 in late trade, Ulta Beauty Inc (NASDAQ:ULTA) which lost 3.64% to settle at 228.76 and Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ:INCY) which was down 3.05% to 77.62 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were OpGen Inc (NASDAQ:OPGN) which rose 23.01% to 8.020, Marinus Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:MRNS) which was up 22.83% to settle at 1.56 and Paringa Resources Ltd (NASDAQ:PNRL) which gained 21.11% to close at 3.01.
The worst performers were Eltek Ltd (NASDAQ:ELTK) which was down 27.33% to 4.360 in late trade, USA Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:USAT) which lost 21.84% to settle at 6.370 and Pensare Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:WRLS) which was down 20.36% to 8.06 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2360 to 602 and 76 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1740 rose and 918 declined, while 80 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 11.85% to 17.33.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.37% or 5.75 to $1561.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 3.80% or 2.05 to hit $55.99 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 0.02% or 0.01 to trade at $60.47 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.00% to 1.1033, while USD/JPY fell 0.01% to 106.36.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.55% at 98.403.
