Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Healthcare and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.65%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 1.07%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.71%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which rose 3.55% or 8.81 points to trade at 256.87 at the close. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) added 2.90% or 2.96 points to end at 105.01 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was up 2.35% or 1.79 points to 77.88 in late trade.
Biggest losers included 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which lost 1.68% or 3.23 points to trade at 188.94 in late trade. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 1.31% or 2.34 points to end at 176.47 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 0.84% or 1.11 points to 130.69.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Edwards Lifesciences Corporation (NYSE:EW) which rose 8.43% to 162.09, Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ:INCY) which was up 7.10% to settle at 78.76 and Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which gained 6.52% to close at 354.64.
The worst performers were Pacific Gas & Electric Co (NYSE:PCG) which was down 17.54% to 6.91 in late trade, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (NASDAQ:GT) which lost 13.04% to settle at 19.00 and Edison International (NYSE:EIX) which was down 5.33% to 55.05 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Kitov Pharmaceuticals Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:KTOV) which rose 169.23% to 2.800, Tyme Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:TYME) which was up 46.34% to settle at 3.60 and China Ceramics Co Ltd (NASDAQ:CCCL) which gained 40.97% to close at 2.0300.
The worst performers were Luokung Technology Corp (NASDAQ:LKCO) which was down 46.96% to 12.200 in late trade, Bio Path Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:BPTH) which lost 35.06% to settle at 0.130 and Estre USA Inc Class A (NASDAQ:ESTR) which was down 31.73% to 1.90 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1931 to 1115 and 94 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1778 rose and 860 declined, while 83 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.46% to 18.60.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.16% or 2.05 to $1289.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 3.11% or 1.57 to hit $52.08 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 2.78% or 1.64 to trade at $60.63 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.48% to 1.1419, while USD/JPY rose 0.49% to 108.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.35% at 95.540.
