Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.55%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.72%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.71%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 2.18% or 2.35 points to trade at 110.14 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) added 1.98% or 4.03 points to end at 207.24 and Visa Inc (NYSE:V) was up 1.48% or 2.27 points to 155.30 in late trade.
Biggest losers included UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which lost 1.41% or 3.47 points to trade at 243.39 in late trade. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) declined 1.03% or 1.95 points to end at 186.79 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) shed 0.18% or 0.34 points to 189.34.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Viacom B Inc (NASDAQ:VIAB) which rose 7.64% to 28.33, Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB) which was up 5.74% to settle at 232.91 and CBS Corporation (NYSE:CBS) which gained 3.93% to close at 47.32.
The worst performers were Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which was down 8.72% to 51.71 in late trade, Centene Corp (NYSE:CNC) which lost 3.86% to settle at 54.85 and Anthem Inc (NYSE:ANTM) which was down 3.17% to 288.30 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Hunter Maritime Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:HUNT) which rose 416.02% to 95.00, Castor Maritime Inc (NASDAQ:CTRM) which was up 111.46% to settle at 10.1500 and CounterPath Corp (NASDAQ:CPAH) which gained 56.07% to close at 2.700.
The worst performers were PHI Inc (OTC:PHIIQ) which was down 36.51% to 0.80 in late trade, OpGen Inc (NASDAQ:OPGN) which lost 34.83% to settle at 0.574 and Criteo Sa (NASDAQ:CRTO) which was down 17.20% to 18.20 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2135 to 843 and 118 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1720 rose and 911 declined, while 87 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 10.10% to 14.68.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.56% or 7.45 to $1321.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 2.09% or 1.23 to hit $60.05 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 1.06% or 0.71 to trade at $67.52 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.41% to 1.1264, while USD/JPY rose 0.57% to 110.58.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.27% at 96.325.
