Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.51%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.92%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.41%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 3.21% or 6.71 points to trade at 216.02 at the close. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 2.29% or 2.86 points to end at 127.97 and Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) was up 2.27% or 5.21 points to 234.84 in late trade.
Biggest losers included International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which lost 1.60% or 2.16 points to trade at 132.87 in late trade. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) declined 1.16% or 1.86 points to end at 158.66 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) shed 1.06% or 1.84 points to 171.25.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Illumina Inc (NASDAQ:ILMN) which rose 16.98% to 423.80, APA Corporation (NASDAQ:APA) which was up 8.77% to settle at 32.00 and Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which gained 7.16% to close at 34.70.
The worst performers were Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which was down 5.27% to 221.39 in late trade, Aptiv PLC (NYSE:APTV) which lost 3.26% to settle at 159.69 and Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) which was down 3.24% to 228.65 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Nutriband Inc (NASDAQ:NTRB) which rose 34.93% to 8.15, Virgin Orbit Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:VORB) which was up 31.30% to settle at 10.57 and TSR Inc (NASDAQ:TSRI) which gained 28.75% to close at 11.150.
The worst performers were Huadi International Group Co Ltd (NASDAQ:HUDI) which was down 24.09% to 20.800 in late trade, China HGS Real Estate Inc (NASDAQ:HGSH) which lost 20.36% to settle at 2.190 and Bone Biologics Corp (NASDAQ:BBLG) which was down 20.04% to 4.31 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2378 to 862 and 129 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2575 rose and 1193 declined, while 223 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 5.10% to 18.41.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.26% or 22.65 to $1821.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 3.94% or 3.08 to hit $81.31 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.01% or 0.01 to trade at $83.62 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.04% to 1.1368, while USD/JPY rose 0.01% to 115.29.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.41% at 95.597.
