Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Industrials, Oil & Gas and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.50% to hit a new 3-month high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.28%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.31%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which rose 2.08% or 2.90 points to trade at 142.38 at the close. Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM) added 1.36% or 1.09 points to end at 81.27 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was up 1.28% or 1.02 points to 80.53 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 0.94% or 1.96 points to trade at 207.11 in late trade. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) declined 0.55% or 0.37 points to end at 67.05 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) shed 0.49% or 0.20 points to 40.84.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) which rose 5.32% to 31.70, Emerson Electric Company (NYSE:EMR) which was up 4.24% to settle at 74.66 and LKQ Corporation (NASDAQ:LKQ) which gained 3.84% to close at 34.37.
The worst performers were Dentsply Sirona Inc (NASDAQ:XRAY) which was down 18.65% to 39.41 in late trade, Patterson Companies Inc (NASDAQ:PDCO) which lost 9.46% to settle at 22.62 and Expeditors International Washington (NASDAQ:EXPD) which was down 5.88% to 72.93 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Wins Finance Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:WINS) which rose 88.52% to 115.00, iFresh Inc (NASDAQ:IFMK) which was up 71.25% to settle at 4.11 and Egalet Corp (NASDAQ:EGLT) which gained 35.36% to close at 0.58.
The worst performers were Bellerophon Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:BLPH) which was down 68.44% to 0.710 in late trade, Gemphire Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:GEMP) which lost 50.55% to settle at 3.63 and Luminex Corporation (NASDAQ:LMNX) which was down 28.04% to 24.98 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1606 to 1431 and 137 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1366 rose and 1165 declined, while 152 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.02% to 10.93 a new 6-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.07% or 0.90 to $1218.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 0.07% or 0.05 to hit $69.06 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 1.04% or 0.77 to trade at $74.52 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.39% to 1.1599, while USD/JPY fell 0.03% to 111.38.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.20% at 95.00.
