Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Industrials, Basic Materials and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.43% to hit a new 52-week high, while the S&P 500 index added 0.39%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.20%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 4.31% or 1.84 points to trade at 44.54 at the close. Honeywell International Inc (NASDAQ:HON) added 2.97% or 5.78 points to end at 200.39 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was up 2.34% or 2.71 points to 118.62 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which lost 1.50% or 0.57 points to trade at 37.67 in late trade. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) declined 1.29% or 2.53 points to end at 193.18 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) shed 1.11% or 6.12 points to 543.65.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Cigna Corp (NYSE:CI) which rose 16.68% to 301.96, Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ:AVGO) which was up 9.00% to settle at 1,029.24 and Etsy Inc (NASDAQ:ETSY) which gained 5.76% to close at 84.69.
The worst performers were Paramount Global Class B (NASDAQ:PARA) which was down 3.62% to 16.24 in late trade, Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which lost 2.71% to settle at 17.62 and Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) which was down 2.31% to 584.25 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were JetAI Inc (NASDAQ:JTAI) which rose 81.93% to 3.02, Nextplay Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:NXTP) which was up 71.44% to settle at 0.72 and Pasithea Therapeutics Corp (NASDAQ:KTTA) which gained 47.42% to close at 0.44.
The worst performers were Altamira Therapeutics Ltd (NASDAQ:CYTO) which was down 53.79% to 0.19 in late trade, Cogent Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:COGT) which lost 53.01% to settle at 4.06 and African Agriculture Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:AAGR) which was down 52.17% to 1.10 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1454 to 1446 and 73 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2057 fell and 1414 advanced, while 118 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.27% to 12.63.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.86% or 17.40 to $1,997.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 0.28% or 0.20 to hit $71.43 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.34% or 0.26 to trade at $76.10 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.03% to 1.08, while USD/JPY rose 0.84% to 146.15.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.06% at 103.69.
