Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Consumer Services, Oil & Gas and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.42%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.70%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.26%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which rose 1.97% or 3.42 points to trade at 177.04 at the close. Visa Inc (NYSE:V) added 1.80% or 2.41 points to end at 136.06 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was up 1.43% or 1.07 points to 75.72 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO), which lost 1.30% or 0.62 points to trade at 46.95 in late trade. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) declined 1.10% or 0.84 points to end at 75.43 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) shed 0.64% or 0.82 points to 127.01.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which rose 8.26% to 20.57, Mattel Inc (NASDAQ:MAT) which was up 7.68% to settle at 11.21 and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE:CMG) which gained 6.63% to close at 485.15.
The worst performers were Pacific Gas & Electric Co (NYSE:PCG) which was down 22.34% to 18.95 in late trade, Medtronic PLC (NYSE:MDT) which lost 6.45% to settle at 82.45 and Philip Morris International Inc (NYSE:PM) which was down 3.06% to 67.42 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Axsome Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:AXSM) which rose 161.22% to 6.87, Loxo Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:LOXO) which was up 66.33% to settle at 232.65 and Advaxis Inc (NASDAQ:ADXS) which gained 47.60% to close at 0.41.
The worst performers were ContraFect Corp (NASDAQ:CFRX) which was down 54.95% to 0.874 in late trade, La Jolla Pharmaceutical Co (NASDAQ:LJPC) which lost 50.19% to settle at 5.24 and Natural Health Trend (NASDAQ:NHTC) which was down 24.73% to 14.8800 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2429 to 670 and 56 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1997 rose and 654 declined, while 59 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.09% to 21.40.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.32% or 4.15 to $1289.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 1.54% or 0.74 to hit $48.70 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.89% or 0.51 to trade at $57.57 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.72% to 1.1476, while USD/JPY rose 0.14% to 108.67.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.53% at 95.245.
