Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.39%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.82%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.54%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which rose 3.86% or 4.72 points to trade at 126.87 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 3.19% or 6.52 points to end at 210.84 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was up 3.00% or 2.76 points to 94.85 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which lost 1.96% or 5.90 points to trade at 295.11 in late trade. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) declined 1.59% or 0.78 points to end at 48.14 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 0.97% or 1.37 points to 139.35.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) which rose 8.97% to 54.45, CarMax Inc (NYSE:KMX) which was up 8.85% to settle at 115.86 and Macerich Company (NYSE:MAC) which gained 6.70% to close at 14.49.
The worst performers were Xerox Corp (NYSE:XRX) which was down 6.09% to 21.12 in late trade, National Oilwell Varco Inc (NYSE:NOV) which lost 5.49% to settle at 13.94 and Welltower Inc (NYSE:WELL) which was down 4.73% to 61.21 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Aclaris Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ACRS) which rose 221.43% to 18.900, Gritstone Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:GRTS) which was up 190.45% to settle at 18.56 and Dare Bioscience Inc (NASDAQ:DARE) which gained 70.14% to close at 2.450.
The worst performers were ProPhase Labs Inc (NASDAQ:PRPH) which was down 26.25% to 11.800 in late trade, Technical Communications (NASDAQ:TCCO) which lost 17.97% to settle at 4.50 and Yield10 Bioscience Inc (NASDAQ:YTEN) which was down 16.03% to 11.51 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1923 to 1188 and 70 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2046 rose and 1040 declined, while 56 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 5.22% to 23.07.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.55% or 10.15 to $1840.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 1.11% or 0.58 to hit $53.00 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 2.08% or 1.14 to trade at $55.89 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.42% to 1.2127, while USD/JPY rose 0.19% to 103.89.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.29% at 90.487.
