Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Consumer Services and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.39% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.43%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.57%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 4.43% or 6.01 points to trade at 141.73 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) added 1.72% or 3.43 points to end at 202.37 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) was up 1.48% or 0.77 points to 52.89 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE), which lost 1.32% or 0.57 points to trade at 42.51 in late trade. Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) declined 1.30% or 2.23 points to end at 169.36 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) shed 0.93% or 0.78 points to 82.93.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which rose 6.40% to 33.09, CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which was up 4.76% to settle at 45.16 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) which gained 4.43% to close at 141.73.
The worst performers were Monster Beverage Corp (NASDAQ:MNST) which was down 5.43% to 60.60 in late trade, Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) which lost 3.09% to settle at 111.68 and Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ALXN) which was down 2.83% to 117.24 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Coda Octopus Group Inc (NASDAQ:CODA) which rose 45.83% to 14.1600, ENDRA Life Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:NDRA) which was up 37.90% to settle at 1.710 and MMTEC Inc (NASDAQ:MTC) which gained 37.50% to close at 7.70.
The worst performers were Savara Inc (NASDAQ:SVRA) which was down 75.21% to 2.620 in late trade, Destination Maternity Corporation (NASDAQ:DEST) which lost 35.00% to settle at 0.78 and Arcadia Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:RKDA) which was down 31.81% to 4.030 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2123 to 869 and 46 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1803 rose and 864 declined, while 69 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.57% to 15.82.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.70% or 9.30 to $1346.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 2.09% or 1.07 to hit $52.21 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 0.05% or 0.03 to trade at $61.34 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.11% to 1.1287, while USD/JPY rose 0.00% to 108.38.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.01% at 96.982.
