Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.39%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.41%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.87%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 1.70% or 2.56 points to trade at 153.31 at the close. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) added 1.43% or 1.47 points to end at 104.27 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was up 1.34% or 1.50 points to 113.27 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO), which lost 1.92% or 0.91 points to trade at 46.57 in late trade. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) declined 1.63% or 1.51 points to end at 90.95 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 1.26% or 0.73 points to 57.05.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which rose 12.65% to 2.760, Lennar Corporation (NYSE:LEN) which was up 7.93% to settle at 46.29 and Intuitive Surgical Inc (NASDAQ:ISRG) which gained 7.06% to close at 517.11.
The worst performers were Constellation Brands Inc Class A (NYSE:STZ) which was down 12.42% to 150.94 in late trade, Digital Realty Trust Inc (NYSE:DLR) which lost 5.13% to settle at 101.83 and Estee Lauder Companies Inc (NYSE:EL) which was down 3.69% to 127.83 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Organogenesis Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:ORGO) which rose 512.72% to 82.350, Phunware Inc (NASDAQ:PHUN) which was up 157.31% to settle at 220.00 and Wins Finance Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:WINS) which gained 140.78% to close at 52.25.
The worst performers were Smart Global Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:SGH) which was down 25.04% to 23.92 in late trade, Microbot Medical Inc (NASDAQ:MBOT) which lost 16.25% to settle at 2.3200 and CLPS Inc (NASDAQ:CLPS) which was down 15.75% to 5.35 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2089 to 964 and 99 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1664 rose and 967 declined, while 80 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.39% to 19.98 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.65% or 8.35 to $1294.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 4.82% or 2.40 to hit $52.18 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 4.38% or 2.57 to trade at $61.29 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.93% to 1.1546, while USD/JPY fell 0.65% to 108.03.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.78% at 94.730.
