Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Financials and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.38%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.65%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.48%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 2.46% or 4.49 points to trade at 186.84 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 2.27% or 0.81 points to end at 36.50 and Honeywell International Inc (NASDAQ:HON) was up 1.95% or 3.51 points to 183.26 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 6.69% or 16.19 points to trade at 225.97 in late trade. Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) declined 2.85% or 7.49 points to end at 255.70 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 0.27% or 0.39 points to 145.70.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Arista Networks (NYSE:ANET) which rose 14.11% to 200.51, Monolithic Power Systems Inc (NASDAQ:MPWR) which was up 9.34% to settle at 441.74 and Leidos Holdings Inc (NYSE:LDOS) which gained 8.01% to close at 99.14.
The worst performers were VF Corporation (NYSE:VFC) which was down 14.02% to 14.72 in late trade, Catalent Inc (NYSE:CTLT) which lost 13.82% to settle at 34.41 and FMC Corporation (NYSE:FMC) which was down 8.21% to 53.20 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Scisparc Ltd (NASDAQ:SPRC) which rose 64.81% to 5.62, GSE Systems Inc (NASDAQ:GVP) which was up 50.63% to settle at 2.38 and Troika Media Group Inc (NASDAQ:TRKA) which gained 48.57% to close at 1.04.
The worst performers were Kintara Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:KTRA) which was down 80.50% to 0.75 in late trade, Sientra Inc (NASDAQ:SIEN) which lost 56.16% to settle at 0.64 and Galera Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:GRTX) which was down 54.02% to 0.10 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2047 to 886 and 77 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2094 rose and 1373 declined, while 133 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 8.15% to 18.14.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.65% or 12.95 to $1,992.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 1.17% or 0.96 to hit $81.35 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 1.10% or 0.95 to trade at $85.40 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.34% to 1.06, while USD/JPY rose 1.69% to 151.62.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.57% at 106.54.
