Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Utilities, Consumer Goods and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.31% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.23%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.11%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT), which rose 4.47% or 3.60 points to trade at 84.13 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 1.03% or 1.31 points to end at 128.19 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) was up 1.01% or 0.46 points to 45.87 in late trade.
Biggest losers included UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which lost 0.83% or 1.62 points to trade at 194.68 in late trade. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) declined 0.62% or 0.21 points to end at 33.55 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) shed 0.54% or 0.50 points to 91.62.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which rose 4.80% to 53.03, United Continental Holdings Inc (NYSE:UAL) which was up 4.67% to settle at 67.72 and Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) which gained 4.47% to close at 84.13.
The worst performers were Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA) which was down 7.39% to 42.46 in late trade, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which lost 6.68% to settle at 3.910 and Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ:SYMC) which was down 3.19% to 31.59 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Roka Bioscience Inc (NASDAQ:ROKA) which rose 134.57% to 1.9000, AnaptysBio Inc (NASDAQ:ANAB) which was up 101.17% to settle at 70.41 and LiNiu Technology Group (NASDAQ:LINU) which gained 43.51% to close at 2.210.
The worst performers were Rentech Inc (NASDAQ:RTK) which was down 37.02% to 0.240 in late trade, Cleantech Solutions International Inc (NASDAQ:CLNT) which lost 24.85% to settle at 4.900 and Neothetics Inc (NASDAQ:NEOT) which was down 21.69% to 0.53 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1930 to 1117 and 155 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1479 rose and 1035 declined, while 125 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.42% to 10.08.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.46% or 5.88 to $1290.88 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 2.64% or 1.31 to hit $50.89 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 1.33% or 0.74 to trade at $56.53 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.61% to 1.1812, while USD/JPY fell 0.21% to 112.44.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.51% at 93.07.
