Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Consumer Goods and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.25%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.41%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.63%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 2.65% or 1.84 points to trade at 71.34 at the close. General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) added 2.18% or 0.32 points to end at 15.03 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was up 2.06% or 2.12 points to 105.04 in late trade.
Biggest losers included 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which lost 1.09% or 2.20 points to trade at 200.21 in late trade. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 0.85% or 1.60 points to end at 186.38 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) shed 0.70% or 0.32 points to 45.16.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Macy’s Inc (NYSE:M) which rose 10.83% to 33.17, Under Armour Inc A (NYSE:UAA) which was up 8.69% to settle at 20.52 and Under Armour Inc C (NYSE:UA) which gained 6.89% to close at 18.310.
The worst performers were IDEXX Laboratories Inc (NASDAQ:IDXX) which was down 4.55% to 199.42 in late trade, CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which lost 2.85% to settle at 40.55 and Akamai Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:AKAM) which was down 2.23% to 74.59 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Blink Charging Co (NASDAQ:BLNK) which rose 31.68% to 7.1900, VIVUS Inc (NASDAQ:VVUS) which was up 26.68% to settle at 0.660 and Eleven Biotherapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:EBIO) which gained 24.15% to close at 3.2900.
The worst performers were aTyr Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:LIFE) which was down 37.04% to 0.850 in late trade, Cesca Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:KOOL) which lost 33.97% to settle at 0.5250 and Global Partner Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:PRPL) which was down 31.97% to 6.83 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1989 to 1084 and 113 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1641 rose and 892 declined, while 135 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 7.93% to 13.47.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to $1290.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.35% or 0.25 to hit $71.56 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 1.07% or 0.84 to trade at $79.27 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.26% to 1.1808, while USD/JPY rose 0.02% to 110.34.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.13% at 93.26.
