Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Consumer Services and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.20% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index added 0.22%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.18%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which rose 1.91% or 1.64 points to trade at 87.34 at the close. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) added 1.45% or 1.75 points to end at 122.26 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was up 1.30% or 1.95 points to 151.64 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which lost 1.72% or 1.04 points to trade at 59.62 in late trade. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) declined 1.01% or 0.39 points to end at 38.29 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) shed 0.78% or 2.08 points to 264.29.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY) which rose 9.86% to 81.57, Under Armour Inc C (NYSE:UA) which was up 5.11% to settle at 16.470 and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE:CMG) which gained 3.73% to close at 815.84.
The worst performers were Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) which was down 15.24% to 95.26 in late trade, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (NYSE:HPE) which lost 8.48% to settle at 15.97 and Cimarex Energy Co (NYSE:XEC) which was down 5.42% to 45.16 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sundance Energy Australia Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:SNDE) which rose 1000.00% to 12.00, ChemoCentryx Inc (NASDAQ:CCXI) which was up 281.27% to settle at 30.730 and Cleveland BioLabs Inc (NASDAQ:CBLI) which gained 47.19% to close at 0.937.
The worst performers were Motif Bio PLC (NASDAQ:MTFB) which was down 36.70% to 0.10 in late trade, Diffusion Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:DFFN) which lost 23.85% to settle at 0.3579 and MTS Systems Corporation (NASDAQ:MTSC) which was down 22.52% to 46.92 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1516 to 1308 and 113 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1375 fell and 1278 advanced, while 74 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.78% to 11.54 a new 52-week low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.31% or 4.55 to $1468.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 0.57% or 0.33 to hit $58.34 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.03% or 0.02 to trade at $63.14 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.05% to 1.1023, while USD/JPY fell 0.00% to 109.03.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.06% at 98.178.
