Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.17%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.87%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.45%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT), which rose 6.54% or 9.05 points to trade at 147.44 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 2.22% or 2.32 points to end at 106.71 and Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) was up 2.15% or 3.41 points to 162.07 in late trade.
Biggest losers included UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which lost 2.09% or 10.74 points to trade at 503.01 in late trade. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) declined 1.75% or 3.20 points to end at 179.50 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 1.59% or 0.61 points to 37.70.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were SVB Financial Group (NASDAQ:SIVB) which rose 9.18% to 239.93, Ceridian HCM Holding Inc (NYSE:CDAY) which was up 8.30% to settle at 72.68 and Match Group Inc (NASDAQ:MTCH) which gained 6.66% to close at 51.92.
The worst performers were Capital One Financial Corporation (NYSE:COF) which was down 7.18% to 103.56 in late trade, Albemarle Corp (NYSE:ALB) which lost 6.48% to settle at 295.86 and Synchrony Financial (NYSE:SYF) which was down 4.85% to 35.92 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Tenax Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:TENX) which rose 45.74% to 0.14, Qurate Retail Inc Series B (NASDAQ:QRTEB) which was up 37.28% to settle at 7.14 and Exagen Inc (NASDAQ:XGN) which gained 42.38% to close at 2.99.
The worst performers were Jowell Global Ltd. (NASDAQ:JWEL) which was down 56.65% to 0.69 in late trade, Fast Radius Inc (NASDAQ:FSRD) which lost 47.79% to settle at 0.10 and Kingstone Companies Inc (NASDAQ:KINS) which was down 45.03% to 0.91 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2356 to 792 and 105 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2499 rose and 1319 declined, while 197 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.41% to 24.54.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.30% or 5.25 to $1,782.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 1.12% or 0.96 to hit $86.83 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.63% or 0.59 to trade at $93.73 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.25% to 1.04, while USD/JPY fell 0.51% to 139.16.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.15% at 106.37.
