Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Consumer Services, Technology and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.17%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.12%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.11%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 3.47% or 5.91 points to trade at 176.30 at the close. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) added 2.99% or 3.54 points to end at 122.12 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was up 2.63% or 4.37 points to 170.35 in late trade.
Biggest losers included American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which lost 3.55% or 4.30 points to trade at 116.85 in late trade. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) declined 2.87% or 1.68 points to end at 56.74 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 1.85% or 2.54 points to 135.01.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Lumen Technologies Inc (NYSE:LUMN) which rose 30.03% to 14.81, Macerich Company (NYSE:MAC) which was up 12.12% to settle at 19.33 and H&R Block Inc (NYSE:HRB) which gained 8.59% to close at 18.34.
The worst performers were Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which was down 5.80% to 27.30 in late trade, Rockwell Automation Inc (NYSE:ROK) which lost 5.71% to settle at 245.95 and Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which was down 5.02% to 20.43 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Live Ventures Inc (NASDAQ:LIVE) which rose 64.15% to 29.17, Koss Corporation (NASDAQ:KOSS) which was up 61.33% to settle at 9.680 and Aikido Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:AIKI) which gained 50.00% to close at 1.830.
The worst performers were Kaspien Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:KSPN) which was down 16.07% to 30.130 in late trade, Capricor Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:CAPR) which lost 16.49% to settle at 6.430 and Repro Med Systems Inc (NASDAQ:KRMD) which was down 16.57% to 4.28 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1660 to 1442 and 87 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1836 fell and 1239 advanced, while 59 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.38% to 22.87.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.22% or 4.15 to $1851.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 0.44% or 0.23 to hit $52.54 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 0.18% or 0.10 to trade at $55.58 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.25% to 1.2167, while USD/JPY fell 0.10% to 103.62.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.27% at 90.127.
