Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Consumer Services, Technology and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.13%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.53%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 1.42%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT), which rose 2.27% or 3.17 points to trade at 143.08 at the close. Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) added 1.69% or 3.38 points to end at 203.35 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 1.57% or 2.60 points to 167.86 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which lost 2.19% or 1.58 points to trade at 70.42 in late trade. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 2.00% or 0.94 points to end at 46.11 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 1.64% or 2.44 points to 146.71.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Nordstrom Inc (NYSE:JWN) which rose 5.70% to 12.60, Under Armour Inc A (NYSE:UAA) which was up 5.61% to settle at 11.86 and Coty Inc (NYSE:COTY) which gained 5.56% to close at 2.85.
The worst performers were Helmerich and Payne Inc (NYSE:HP) which was down 7.99% to 13.48 in late trade, Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL) which lost 7.30% to settle at 11.17 and Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) which was down 7.02% to 40.28 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Solid Biosciences LLC (NASDAQ:SLDB) which rose 70.44% to 3.46, Enlivex Therapeutics Ltd (NASDAQ:ENLV) which was up 47.98% to settle at 8.79 and AMAG Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:AMAG) which gained 45.21% to close at 13.65.
The worst performers were Zosano Pharma Corp (NASDAQ:ZSAN) which was down 56.79% to 0.700 in late trade, Selecta Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:SELB) which lost 33.87% to settle at 1.64 and LogicBio Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:LOGC) which was down 31.72% to 6.20 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2074 to 1018 and 73 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1870 rose and 1016 declined, while 72 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.25% to 26.70.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.85% or 16.10 to $1911.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 4.08% or 1.64 to hit $38.58 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 0.10% or 0.04 to trade at $40.76 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.00% to 1.1747, while USD/JPY rose 0.02% to 105.53.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.15% at 93.782.
