Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Consumer Services, Consumer Goods and Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.11% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.05%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.11%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 2.06% or 2.98 points to trade at 147.65 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 1.31% or 3.53 points to end at 272.93 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was up 1.23% or 1.14 points to 94.18 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which lost 1.73% or 2.09 points to trade at 118.55 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 1.18% or 1.72 points to end at 143.59 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) shed 0.98% or 0.54 points to 54.32.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which rose 3.96% to 212.28, Jefferies Financial Group Inc (NYSE:JEF) which was up 3.88% to settle at 19.83 and Discovery Inc Class A (NASDAQ:DISCA) which gained 3.50% to close at 30.76.
The worst performers were ABIOMED Inc (NASDAQ:ABMD) which was down 20.22% to 178.09 in late trade, Nektar Therapeutics (NASDAQ:NKTR) which lost 8.35% to settle at 18.01 and Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation (NYSE:COG) which was down 5.50% to 17.17 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Karuna Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:KRTX) which rose 442.99% to 96.00, Rave Restaurant Group Inc (NASDAQ:RAVE) which was up 37.24% to settle at 1.990 and Evoke Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:EVOK) which gained 34.55% to close at 1.48.
The worst performers were InVivo Therapeutics Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:NVIV) which was down 37.48% to 0.27 in late trade, Urban Tea Inc (NASDAQ:MYT) which lost 30.10% to settle at 0.6892 and Phio Pharmaceuticals Corp (NASDAQ:PHIO) which was down 26.99% to 0.1388 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1624 to 1219 and 104 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1556 fell and 1093 advanced, while 70 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.40% to 12.46.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.23% or 3.35 to $1471.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 1.47% or 0.85 to hit $56.98 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 1.67% or 1.06 to trade at $62.24 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.1074, while USD/JPY rose 0.02% to 108.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.18% at 97.695.
