Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.09%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.15%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.52%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which rose 1.93% or 1.20 points to trade at 63.26 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) added 1.76% or 7.06 points to end at 408.51 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was up 1.65% or 3.45 points to 212.59 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which lost 1.27% or 2.26 points to trade at 175.35 in late trade. Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) declined 1.02% or 1.54 points to end at 148.91 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) shed 0.90% or 2.95 points to 324.79.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY) which rose 8.35% to 121.53, Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which was up 6.99% to settle at 99.43 and Capri Holdings Ltd (NYSE:CPRI) which gained 6.10% to close at 60.52.
The worst performers were Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) which was down 6.10% to 86.07 in late trade, Nielsen Holdings PLC (NYSE:NLSN) which lost 3.50% to settle at 21.80 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) which was down 3.10% to 48.38 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were 111 Inc (NASDAQ:YI) which rose 30.29% to 8.000, CMI Acquisition LLC (NASDAQ:SKYT) which was up 29.63% to settle at 26.69 and ENDRA Life Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:NDRA) which gained 27.50% to close at 2.040.
The worst performers were Theravance Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:TBPH) which was down 34.79% to 9.24 in late trade, Omega Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:OMGA) which lost 14.52% to settle at 19.14 and DatChat Inc (NASDAQ:DATS) which was down 12.34% to 6.11 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2221 to 1004 and 135 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2321 rose and 1241 declined, while 132 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.41% to 17.22.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.02% or 0.45 to $1805.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 3.08% or 2.02 to hit $67.66 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 3.07% or 2.10 to trade at $70.47 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.13% to 1.1759, while USD/JPY rose 0.00% to 109.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.09% at 92.888.
