Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Utilities, Consumer Goods and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.07%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.10%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.10%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which rose 1.07% or 1.78 points to trade at 167.37 at the close. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) added 0.95% or 0.84 points to end at 89.00 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 0.76% or 1.24 points to 165.35 in late trade.
Biggest losers included General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), which lost 7.17% or 1.47 points to trade at 19.02 in late trade. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) declined 1.64% or 2.22 points to end at 133.32 and United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) shed 0.88% or 1.04 points to 117.07.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Mattel Inc (NASDAQ:MAT) which rose 20.66% to 17.64, GGP Inc (NYSE:GGP) which was up 8.33% to settle at 24.05 and Hasbro Inc (NASDAQ:HAS) which gained 5.89% to close at 96.84.
The worst performers were General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) which was down 7.17% to 19.02 in late trade, Kohl’s Corporation (NYSE:KSS) which lost 4.32% to settle at 41.18 and WW Grainger Inc (NYSE:GWW) which was down 3.78% to 195.79 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Cherokee Inc (NASDAQ:CHKE) which rose 52.63% to 2.90, TheStreet Inc (NASDAQ:TST) which was up 33.71% to settle at 1.246 and Ekso Bionics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:EKSO) which gained 32.03% to close at 2.02.
The worst performers were root9B Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:RTNB) which was down 57.01% to 0.5675 in late trade, Calithera Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:CALA) which lost 28.72% to settle at 11.72 and Diana Containerships Inc (NASDAQ:DCIX) which was down 28.40% to 7.7900 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1723 to 1367 and 132 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1275 rose and 1261 declined, while 123 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.86% to 11.50.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.29% or 3.69 to $1277.89 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 0.02% or 0.01 to hit $56.73 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 0.61% or 0.39 to trade at $63.13 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.00% to 1.1667, while USD/JPY rose 0.03% to 113.59.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.10% at 94.39.
