Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Consumer Services and Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.04% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.13%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.33%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 2.03% or 2.00 points to trade at 100.64 at the close. Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) added 1.78% or 2.05 points to end at 117.04 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 1.37% or 0.63 points to 46.70 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which lost 3.99% or 1.89 points to trade at 45.53 in late trade. DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP) declined 1.29% or 0.92 points to end at 70.24 and Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) shed 1.09% or 0.98 points to 88.70.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Michael Kors Holdings Limited (NYSE:KORS) which rose 14.70% to 54.62, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which was up 11.76% to settle at 4.180 and Twenty-First Century Fox Inc A (NASDAQ:FOXA) which gained 9.93% to close at 27.45.
The worst performers were Henry Schein Inc (NASDAQ:HSIC) which was down 9.79% to 70.04 in late trade, Sysco Corporation (NYSE:SYY) which lost 4.39% to settle at 54.17 and Packaging Corporation of America (NYSE:PKG) which was down 4.13% to 110.96 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Top Ships Inc (NASDAQ:TOPS) which rose 133.33% to 1.6800, Diana Containerships Inc (NASDAQ:DCIX) which was up 80.11% to settle at 20.1900 and Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc (NASDAQ:HMNY) which gained 47.15% to close at 14.200.
The worst performers were Tivity Health Inc (NASDAQ:TVTY) which was down 34.24% to 31.60 in late trade, Xunlei Ltd Adr (NASDAQ:XNET) which lost 25.09% to settle at 8.51 and Medical Transcription Billing Corp (NASDAQ:MTBC) which was down 24.56% to 3.0100 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1868 to 1253 and 106 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1285 rose and 1226 declined, while 139 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.39% to 9.45.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.99% or 12.59 to $1281.79 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 3.04% or 1.69 to hit $57.33 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 3.48% or 2.16 to trade at $64.23 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.05% to 1.1611, while USD/JPY fell 0.28% to 113.76.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.23% at 94.61.
