Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Utilities, Financials and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.30%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.33%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.21%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which rose 1.22% or 0.82 points to trade at 67.79 at the close. United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) added 0.76% or 0.77 points to end at 102.37 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was up 0.61% or 0.72 points to 118.85 in late trade.
Biggest losers included The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which lost 1.36% or 1.56 points to trade at 112.99 in late trade. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) declined 1.11% or 1.55 points to end at 138.45 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) shed 0.77% or 1.22 points to 157.63.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Cognizant Technology Solutions (NASDAQ:CTSH) which rose 5.64% to 50.40, News Corp B (NASDAQ:NWS) which was up 4.99% to settle at 14.93 and Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which gained 4.14% to close at 102.63.
The worst performers were Transocean Ltd (NYSE:RIG) which was down 7.69% to 9.84 in late trade, Centene Corporation (NYSE:CNC) which lost 5.50% to settle at 63.28 and Teradata Corporation (NYSE:TDC) which was down 5.05% to 29.43 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were xG Technology Inc (NASDAQ:XGTI) which rose 57.04% to 0.4460, Nova Lifestyle I (NASDAQ:NVFY) which was up 39.94% to settle at 5.080 and Five Star Quality Care Inc (NASDAQ:FVE) which gained 39.27% to close at 2.660.
The worst performers were Real Goods Solar Inc (NASDAQ:RGSE) which was down 39.11% to 2.3200 in late trade, Great Basin Scientific Inc (NASDAQ:GBSN) which lost 37.12% to settle at 1.4400 and Kingold Jewelry Inc (NASDAQ:KGJI) which was down 22.57% to 1.7500 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1894 to 1264 and 75 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1497 fell and 1036 advanced, while 86 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.35% to 13.47.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.14% or 1.85 to $1315.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 0.87% or 0.42 to hit $48.66 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 1.18% or 0.59 to trade at $50.78 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.23% to 1.1214, while USD/JPY rose 0.26% to 101.60.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.25% at 95.62.
