Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Consumer Services, Oil & Gas and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.29% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.30%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.27%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which rose 0.78% or 0.92 points to trade at 118.48 at the close. Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) added 0.35% or 0.47 points to end at 133.97 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was up 0.28% or 0.14 points to 50.42 in late trade.
Biggest losers included McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which lost 1.49% or 1.70 points to trade at 112.39 in late trade. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 1.14% or 0.59 points to end at 51.03 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) shed 1.05% or 1.33 points to 125.09.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Hasbro Inc (NASDAQ:HAS) which rose 7.43% to 81.82, Vulcan Materials Company (NYSE:VMC) which was up 2.58% to settle at 112.60 and Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) which gained 2.35% to close at 35.03.
The worst performers were Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which was down 3.33% to 12.47 in late trade, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which lost 3.28% to settle at 6.345 and HP Inc (NYSE:HPQ) which was down 3.11% to 14.03 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Ultrapetrol Ltd (NASDAQ:ULTR) which rose 39.89% to 0.2490, Ocean Power Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:OPTT) which was up 20.85% to settle at 3.420 and Contravir Pharmaceut (NASDAQ:CTRV) which gained 19.39% to close at 2.3400.
The worst performers were Ptc Therape (NASDAQ:PTCT) which was down 39.94% to 7.97 in late trade, Top Image Systems Ltd (NASDAQ:TISA) which lost 25.81% to settle at 1.610 and Ignite Restaurant Group Inc (NASDAQ:IRG) which was down 24.01% to 0.500 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1891 to 1253 and 89 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1493 fell and 1012 advanced, while 98 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.19% to 16.15.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.01% or 0.15 to $1255.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 0.87% or 0.44 to hit $49.91 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 0.81% or 0.42 to trade at $51.53 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.26% to 1.1000, while USD/JPY fell 0.25% to 103.90.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.21% at 97.87.
