Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1.57%, while the S&P 500 index added 1.78%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 2.12%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which rose 3.42% or 3.77 points to trade at 114.13 at the close. JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) added 3.32% or 1.91 points to end at 59.52 and Visa Inc (NYSE:V) was up 2.48% or 1.82 points to 75.16 in late trade.
Biggest losers included EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which lost 2.08% or 1.33 points to trade at 62.75 in late trade. Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 0.01% or 0.01 points to end at 71.51 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) gained 0.15% or 0.08 points to 54.82.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Endo International PLC (NASDAQ:ENDP) which rose 18.26% to 16.19, Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which was up 11.84% to settle at 13.89 and Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:MPC) which gained 8.41% to close at 35.70.
The worst performers were Hormel Foods Corporation (NYSE:HRL) which was down 2.32% to 34.98 in late trade, EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) which lost 2.08% to settle at 62.75 and Dow Chemical Company (NYSE:DOW) which was down 2.04% to 48.50 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were ReachLocal Inc (NASDAQ:RLOC) which rose 174.70% to 4.560, Threshold Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:THLD) which was up 74.47% to settle at 0.6199 and Check Cap Ltd (NASDAQ:CHEK) which gained 34.62% to close at 1.400.
The worst performers were Regulus Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:RGLS) which was down 49.30% to 2.540 in late trade, Celyad SA (NASDAQ:CYAD) which lost 33.33% to settle at 28.30 and RIT Technologies Ltd (NASDAQ:RITT) which was down 40.00% to 0.150 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2787 to 514 and 23 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2054 rose and 539 declined, while 48 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 20.92% to 18.86.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 0.79% or 10.40 to $1314.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 3.35% or 1.55 to hit $47.88 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 3.06% or 1.46 to trade at $49.23 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.52% to 1.1082, while USD/JPY rose 0.67% to 102.68.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.46% at 96.11.
