Investing.com – Brazil stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Electric Power, Public Utilities and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Sao Paulo, the Bovespa fell 2.79% to hit a new 5-year low.
The best performers of the session on the Bovespa were Petroleo Brasileiro SA (SA:PETR4), which rose 2.54% or 0.17 points to trade at 6.87 at the close. Meanwhile, Smiles ON (SA:SMLE3) added 1.26% or 0.44 points to end at 35.24 and Petroleo Brasileiro SA (SA:PETR3) was up 1.17% or 0.10 points to 8.67 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Klabin Unt (SA:KLBN11), which fell 6.44% or 1.51 points to trade at 21.94 at the close. EDP - Energias do Brasil SA (SA:ENBR3) declined 6.40% or 0.77 points to end at 11.27 and Cia Hering (SA:HGTX3) was down 6.31% or 0.96 points to 14.25.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange by 247 to 71 and 5 ended unchanged.
The CBOE Brazil Etf Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Bovespa options, was up 8.11% to 47.34.
Gold for February delivery was up 1.29% or 13.70 to $1073.90 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 0.77% or 0.28 to hit $36.76 a barrel, while the March US coffee C contract fell 1.61% or 2.03 to trade at $124.02 .
USD/BRL was up 1.69% to 4.0384, while EUR/BRL rose 1.43% to 4.3756.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.16% at 98.93.
