Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Telecoms, Healthcare and Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.12% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.10%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.28%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 2.75% or 1.73 points to trade at 64.72 at the close. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) added 2.21% or 0.65 points to end at 30.07 and Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) was up 1.52% or 1.02 points to 67.97 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX), which lost 1.28% or 1.25 points to trade at 96.44 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 1.04% or 0.34 points to end at 32.34 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 0.83% or 1.31 points to 156.29.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Mallinckrodt (NYSE:MNK) which rose 7.95% to 58.96, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide (NYSE:HOT) which was up 4.49% to settle at 84.19 and PayPal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) which gained 4.39% to close at 41.14.
The worst performers were Sherwin-Williams Company (NYSE:SHW) which was down 5.33% to 273.29 in late trade, Wyndham Worldwide Corp (NYSE:WYN) which lost 4.60% to settle at 77.07 and Williams Companies Inc (NYSE:WMB) which was down 4.41% to 17.35 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Carver Bancorp Inc (NASDAQ:CARV) which rose 54.55% to 5.44, China HGS Real Estate Inc (NASDAQ:HGSH) which was up 37.77% to settle at 2.740 and Vestin Realty Mortgage II Inc (NASDAQ:VRTB) which gained 28.86% to close at 1.620.
The worst performers were Towerstream Corporation (NASDAQ:TWER) which was down 19.89% to 0.1450 in late trade, CombiMatrix Corp (NASDAQ:CBMX) which lost 17.60% to settle at 4.400 and Jetpay Corp (NASDAQ:JTPY) which was down 14.93% to 2.450 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1675 to 1670 and 28 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1310 rose and 1264 declined, while 66 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.43% to 13.82 a new 6-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was down 0.79% or 9.90 to $1244.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 1.26% or 0.52 to hit $41.66 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 1.00% or 0.41 to trade at $41.61 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.24% to 1.1242, while USD/JPY rose 0.32% to 111.91.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.33% at 95.38.
