Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 3.94% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index declined 4.32%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 5.16%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which fell 1.90% or 3.09 points to trade at 159.41 at the close. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) fell 1.88% or 3.11 points to end at 162.22 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) was down 2.06% or 2.85 points to 135.22 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 7.19% or 11.41 points to trade at 147.31 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 7.19% or 2.27 points to end at 29.29 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) shed 6.59% or 19.61 points to 277.93.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Corteva Inc (NYSE:CTVA) which rose 0.87% to 62.65, Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) which was up 0.80% to settle at 41.74 and CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which gained 0.67% to close at 100.15.
The worst performers were Eastman Chemical Company (NYSE:EMN) which was down 11.34% to 84.11 in late trade, NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which lost 9.47% to settle at 131.31 and Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:META) which was down 9.37% to 153.13 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Akero Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:AKRO) which rose 136.76% to 29.05, Aditx Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ADTX) which was up 113.75% to settle at 0.37 and Comera Life Sciences Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:CMRA) which gained 100.00% to close at 3.86.
The worst performers were Cardiff Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:CRDF) which was down 41.12% to 1.89 in late trade, Rent the Runway Inc (NASDAQ:RENT) which lost 38.74% to settle at 3.02 and InMed Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:INM) which was down 35.73% to 12.07 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2834 to 359 and 87 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 3010 fell and 816 advanced, while 188 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 14.24% to 27.27 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 1.63% or 28.45 to $1,712.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 0.28% or 0.25 to hit $87.53 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 0.68% or 0.64 to trade at $93.36 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 1.44% to 1.00, while USD/JPY rose 1.23% to 144.59.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 1.37% at 109.58.
