Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Industrials, Technology and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 3.10%, while the S&P 500 index lost 3.24%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 3.80%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which fell 0.01% or 0.01 points to trade at 93.31 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) fell 0.12% or 0.07 points to end at 58.09 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was down 0.12% or 0.18 points to 146.03 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 6.93% or 9.63 points to trade at 129.32 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 4.85% or 17.46 points to end at 342.50 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) shed 4.75% or 2.38 points to 47.75.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were AutoZone Inc (NYSE:AZO) which rose 6.75% to 880.07, Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) which was up 1.72% to settle at 33.79 and Entergy Corporation (NYSE:ETR) which gained 1.33% to close at 88.98.
The worst performers were Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which was down 10.92% to 21.12 in late trade, United Rentals Inc (NYSE:URI) which lost 10.88% to settle at 106.29 and E-TRADE Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:ETFC) which was down 8.05% to 48.65 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Pernix Therapeutics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PTX) which rose 41.63% to 0.575, American Electric Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:AETI) which was up 37.96% to settle at 1.490 and Novelion Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:NVLN) which gained 32.65% to close at 1.300.
The worst performers were Determine Inc (NASDAQ:DTRM) which was down 25.04% to 0.494 in late trade, ConforMIS Inc (NASDAQ:CFMS) which lost 22.46% to settle at 0.56 and Smaaash Entertainment Inc (NASDAQ:SMSH) which was down 19.64% to 2.67 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2584 to 533 and 42 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2305 fell and 351 advanced, while 70 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 26.16% to 20.74.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.33% or 4.05 to $1243.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 0.21% or 0.11 to hit $52.84 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.16% or 0.10 to trade at $61.59 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.11% to 1.1342, while USD/JPY fell 0.78% to 112.78.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.06% at 96.907.
