Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Utilities, Industrials and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.58%, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.83%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.75%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which rose 3.33% or 1.33 points to trade at 41.21 at the close. Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 1.26% or 1.82 points to end at 145.97 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 0.50% or 1.32 points to 265.03 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 5.07% or 10.86 points to trade at 203.20 in late trade. Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) declined 4.08% or 2.24 points to end at 52.60 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) shed 3.56% or 5.00 points to 135.37.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were FLIR Systems Inc (NASDAQ:FLIR) which rose 19.32% to 52.30, L Brands Inc (NYSE:LB) which was up 6.08% to settle at 39.45 and Tapestry Inc (NYSE:TPR) which gained 6.11% to close at 32.98.
The worst performers were Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which was down 6.72% to 23.72 in late trade, Arconic Corp (NYSE:ARNC) which lost 6.17% to settle at 27.96 and Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which was down 6.00% to 20.36 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Check Cap Ltd (NASDAQ:CHEK) which rose 195.65% to 1.360, Bionano Genomics Inc (NASDAQ:BNGO) which was up 112.01% to settle at 6.530 and Jaguar Health Inc (NASDAQ:JAGX) which gained 106.14% to close at 1.6800.
The worst performers were Calithera Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:CALA) which was down 43.99% to 2.75 in late trade, Beam Global (NASDAQ:BEEM) which lost 22.46% to settle at 57.21 and Chindata Group Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:CD) which was down 19.99% to 19.17 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2196 to 911 and 57 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1853 fell and 1166 advanced, while 45 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 20.66% to 27.45 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 2.69% or 50.90 to $1946.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 2.66% or 1.29 to hit $47.23 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 2.28% or 1.18 to trade at $50.62 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.90% to 1.2246, while USD/JPY fell 0.06% to 103.14.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.01% at 89.885.
