Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Financials, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.58%, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.16%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.50%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO), which rose 0.66% or 0.28 points to trade at 42.68 at the close. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) added 0.06% or 0.02 points to end at 35.70 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) was down 0.07% or 0.06 points to 82.40 in late trade.
Biggest losers included JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which lost 4.27% or 4.73 points to trade at 105.93 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 3.40% or 7.98 points to end at 227.03 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) shed 3.34% or 3.38 points to 97.72.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Align Technology Inc (NASDAQ:ALGN) which rose 2.40% to 326.18, Applied Materials Inc (NASDAQ:AMAT) which was up 2.30% to settle at 52.02 and Kohl’s Corporation (NYSE:KSS) which gained 2.16% to close at 66.69.
The worst performers were BorgWarner Inc (NYSE:BWA) which was down 5.79% to 48.48 in late trade, Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) which lost 5.75% to settle at 49.96 and State Street Corporation (NYSE:STT) which was down 5.36% to 95.08 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Co-Diagnostics Inc (NASDAQ:CODX) which rose 118.52% to 3.54, Axovant Sciences Ltd (NASDAQ:AXON) which was up 23.65% to settle at 1.49 and Mammoth Energy Services Inc (NASDAQ:TUSK) which gained 22.25% to close at 38.08.
The worst performers were Akers Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:AKER) which was down 33.58% to 0.391 in late trade, Top Ships Inc (NASDAQ:TOPS) which lost 32.67% to settle at 1.0250 and NF Energy Saving Corporation (NASDAQ:NFEC) which was down 23.43% to 2.3200 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1797 to 1286 and 114 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1534 fell and 1000 advanced, while 129 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 29.20% to 17.08 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.33% or 4.30 to $1299.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 1.53% or 1.04 to hit $66.84 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 0.21% or 0.16 to trade at $75.48 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.76% to 1.1537, while USD/JPY fell 0.69% to 108.66.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.48% at 94.81.
