Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.51%, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.08%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.86%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT), which rose 6.78% or 8.06 points to trade at 126.95 at the close. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) added 0.49% or 0.59 points to end at 122.22 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) was down 0.04% or 0.02 points to 45.21 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 4.81% or 9.03 points to trade at 178.88 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 3.86% or 8.00 points to end at 199.36 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) shed 3.70% or 3.57 points to 93.01.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) which rose 6.78% to 126.95, Rollins Inc (NYSE:ROL) which was up 6.71% to settle at 45.62 and Air Products and Chemicals Inc (NYSE:APD) which gained 6.52% to close at 265.13.
The worst performers were TechnipFMC PLC (NYSE:FTI) which was down 7.90% to 7.11 in late trade, United Airlines Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:UAL) which lost 7.55% to settle at 32.55 and Devon Energy Corporation (NYSE:DVN) which was down 7.26% to 10.35 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Corvus Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:CRVS) which rose 80.84% to 4.96, ContraVir Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:HEPA) which was up 43.06% to settle at 4.12 and Vaxart Inc (NASDAQ:VXRT) which gained 37.73% to close at 8.8700.
The worst performers were Broadway Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:BYFC) which was down 28.92% to 2.360 in late trade, Evolus Inc (NASDAQ:EOLS) which lost 27.44% to settle at 3.86 and Remark Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MARK) which was down 27.03% to 1.8900 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2159 to 724 and 53 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1970 fell and 724 advanced, while 54 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.33% to 29.43.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.78% or 14.05 to $1807.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 0.47% or 0.19 to hit $40.44 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.12% or 0.05 to trade at $42.94 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.04% to 1.1275, while USD/JPY rose 0.07% to 107.58.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.24% at 96.910.
