Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Consumer Services, Telecoms and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.16%, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.27%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.23%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 1.63% or 0.80 points to trade at 49.91 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 0.30% or 1.08 points to end at 364.56 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was down 0.32% or 0.42 points to 131.65 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which lost 4.51% or 4.95 points to trade at 104.86 in late trade. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) declined 2.41% or 1.35 points to end at 54.71 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 2.31% or 1.61 points to 68.04.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were The AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) which rose 7.56% to 11.24, Discovery Communications C Inc (NASDAQ:DISCK) which was up 3.86% to settle at 24.75 and Macy’s Inc (NYSE:M) which gained 3.46% to close at 28.40.
The worst performers were AutoZone Inc (NYSE:AZO) which was down 11.05% to 654.55 in late trade, Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSA) which lost 7.38% to settle at 36.66 and Perrigo Co (NYSE:PRGO) which was down 7.13% to 82.00 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were ARCA Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:ABIO) which rose 41.11% to 0.635, Akers Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:AKER) which was up 31.58% to settle at 0.750 and T2 Biosystms Inc (NASDAQ:TTOO) which gained 16.14% to close at 5.18.
The worst performers were Akorn Inc (NASDAQ:AKRX) which was down 38.41% to 18.65 in late trade, Gulf Island Fabrication Inc (NASDAQ:GIFI) which lost 31.91% to settle at 8.00 and Aytu BioScience Inc (NASDAQ:AYTU) which was down 27.94% to 0.4900 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2459 to 678 and 24 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1898 fell and 616 advanced, while 128 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 19.62% to 18.90.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 1.04% or 13.80 to $1319.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 1.60% or 1.02 to hit $62.89 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 1.26% or 0.85 to trade at $66.44 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.72% to 1.2228, while USD/JPY rose 0.41% to 107.38.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.65% at 90.35.
