Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.08%, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.16%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.08%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which rose 1.33% or 1.55 points to trade at 117.89 at the close. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) added 0.87% or 1.43 points to end at 165.03 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) was up 0.16% or 0.49 points to 298.07 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which lost 4.31% or 7.20 points to trade at 160.04 in late trade. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) declined 3.81% or 6.07 points to end at 153.25 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) shed 3.21% or 1.11 points to 33.50.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Molson Coors Brewing Co Class B (NYSE:TAP) which rose 7.66% to 65.08, Broadridge Financial Solutions Inc (NYSE:BR) which was up 6.30% to settle at 153.26 and Marriott International Inc (NASDAQ:MAR) which gained 4.98% to close at 178.61.
The worst performers were Signature Bank (OTC:SBNY) which was down 15.82% to 0.07 in late trade, Arista Networks (NYSE:ANET) which lost 15.72% to settle at 134.98 and Leidos Holdings Inc (NYSE:LDOS) which was down 14.54% to 80.61 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were VCI Global Ltd (NASDAQ:VCIG) which rose 546.77% to 17.01, Minim Inc (NASDAQ:MINM) which was up 142.57% to settle at 4.90 and Actelis Networks Inc (NASDAQ:ASNS) which gained 114.14% to close at 6.51.
The worst performers were GD Culture Group Ltd (NASDAQ:GDC) which was down 89.03% to 3.40 in late trade, Utime Ltd (NASDAQ:UTME) which lost 48.18% to settle at 1.14 and Jupiter Wellness Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:JWAC) which was down 46.39% to 4.23 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2318 to 673 and 93 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2540 fell and 1027 advanced, while 169 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 10.57% to 17.78.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.69% or 33.60 to $2,025.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 5.35% or 4.05 to hit $71.61 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 5.08% or 4.03 to trade at $75.28 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.25% to 1.10, while USD/JPY fell 0.67% to 136.57.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.22% at 101.69.
