Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Financials, Basic Materials and Telecoms sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.07%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.76%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.93%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT), which rose 1.82% or 1.43 points to trade at 79.80 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) added 1.43% or 2.15 points to end at 152.93 and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) was up 0.80% or 0.61 points to 77.18 in late trade.
Biggest losers included United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX), which lost 5.69% or 6.71 points to trade at 111.21 in late trade. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) declined 3.73% or 4.47 points to end at 115.43 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 3.59% or 8.10 points to 217.78.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were TripAdvisor Inc (NASDAQ:TRIP) which rose 4.23% to 44.55, Urban Outfitters Inc (NASDAQ:URBN) which was up 3.65% to settle at 21.87 and Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) which gained 2.99% to close at 32.75.
The worst performers were Mallinckrodt (NYSE:MNK) which was down 12.28% to 36.12 in late trade, XL Group Ltd (NYSE:XL) which lost 5.80% to settle at 38.27 and United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) which was down 5.69% to 111.21 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Insmed Inc (NASDAQ:INSM) which rose 119.61% to 26.990, XOMA Corp (NASDAQ:XOMA) which was up 44.19% to settle at 16.1200 and Tyme Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:TYME) which gained 32.04% to close at 7.50.
The worst performers were Cellectis SA (NASDAQ:CLLS) which was down 20.26% to 25.66 in late trade, LM Funding America Inc (NASDAQ:LMFA) which lost 16.88% to settle at 2.61 and Federated National Holding Company (NASDAQ:FNHC) which was down 16.10% to 12.82 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2148 to 964 and 124 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1705 fell and 809 advanced, while 126 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 21.72% to 12.33.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.01% or 13.40 to $1343.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 2.66% or 1.26 to hit $48.55 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 1.55% or 0.81 to trade at $53.15 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.18% to 1.1917, while USD/JPY fell 0.83% to 108.81.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.32% at 92.27.
