Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.99% to hit a new 3-month low, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.66%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.63%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 1.75% or 0.97 points to trade at 56.48 at the close. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) added 1.49% or 1.05 points to end at 71.45 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) was up 1.48% or 0.63 points to 43.23 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 6.59% or 23.68 points to trade at 335.59 in late trade. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) declined 4.13% or 5.15 points to end at 119.64 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shed 2.91% or 3.11 points to 103.85.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Red Hat Inc (NYSE:RHT) which rose 45.38% to 169.63, Signet Jewelers Ltd (NYSE:SIG) which was up 6.95% to settle at 54.60 and Cerner Corporation (NASDAQ:CERN) which gained 5.13% to close at 58.40.
The worst performers were L3 Technologies Inc (NYSE:LLL) which was down 8.83% to 186.22 in late trade, Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) which lost 8.80% to settle at 146.69 and Vulcan Materials Company (NYSE:VMC) which was down 4.72% to 84.20 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Electrameccanica Vehicles Corp (NASDAQ:SOLO) which rose 108.72% to 4.5500, Dolphin Entertainment Inc (NASDAQ:DLPN) which was up 12.43% to settle at 1.99 and LogicBio Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:LOGC) which gained 25.06% to close at 10.73.
The worst performers were RumbleON Inc (NASDAQ:RMBL) which was down 26.28% to 5.05 in late trade, ReShape Lifesciences Inc (NASDAQ:RSLS) which lost 25.38% to settle at 0.0194 and Avinger Inc (NASDAQ:AVGR) which was down 24.36% to 0.59 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1822 to 1246 and 77 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1551 fell and 1107 advanced, while 66 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.24% to 24.70.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.12% or 1.50 to $1231.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 1.15% or 0.78 to hit $66.81 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 0.84% or 0.65 to trade at $76.97 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.16% to 1.1384, while USD/JPY rose 0.38% to 112.32.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.26% at 96.38.
