Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Technology, Industrials and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.95%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.39%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.83%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO), which rose 1.84% or 0.99 points to trade at 54.78 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) added 1.06% or 0.64 points to end at 61.05 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was up 1.05% or 0.88 points to 84.68 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 6.79% or 25.06 points to trade at 344.00 in late trade. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) declined 6.22% or 8.47 points to end at 127.70 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) shed 1.96% or 2.34 points to 116.76.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Kansas City Southern (NYSE:KSU) which rose 7.26% to 145.25, Intuitive Surgical Inc (NASDAQ:ISRG) which was up 6.96% to settle at 566.25 and State Street Corp (NYSE:STT) which gained 6.10% to close at 63.34.
The worst performers were L Brands Inc (NYSE:LB) which was down 9.89% to 16.31 in late trade, Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) which lost 6.79% to settle at 344.00 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) which was down 6.22% to 127.70 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Greenland Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:GLAC) which rose 47.99% to 10.330, Bionano Genomics Inc (NASDAQ:BNGO) which was up 37.68% to settle at 1.90 and Attis Industries Inc (NASDAQ:ATIS) which gained 31.58% to close at 1.75.
The worst performers were BIOLASE Inc (NASDAQ:BIOL) which was down 19.80% to 0.8020 in late trade, Synthesis Energy Systems Inc (NASDAQ:SES) which lost 18.04% to settle at 7.5400 and Capstone Turbine Corp (NASDAQ:CPST) which was down 15.38% to 0.330 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1435 to 1381 and 101 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1543 fell and 1064 advanced, while 92 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.34% to 14.25.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.33% or 4.95 to $1493.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 0.39% or 0.21 to hit $53.72 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 1.03% or 0.62 to trade at $59.29 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.44% to 1.1171, while USD/JPY fell 0.21% to 108.42.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.42% at 96.925.
