Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Consumer Services, Consumer Goods and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.84% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.77%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.17%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO), which rose 3.34% or 1.77 points to trade at 54.73 at the close. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 1.67% or 2.63 points to end at 159.75 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) was up 1.01% or 0.54 points to 53.86 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which lost 3.65% or 1.03 points to trade at 27.16 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 2.83% or 0.95 points to end at 32.58 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) shed 2.35% or 5.41 points to 224.54.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which rose 7.40% to 106.24, Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) which was up 3.34% to settle at 54.73 and Juniper Networks Inc (NYSE:JNPR) which gained 3.06% to close at 27.95.
The worst performers were CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) which was down 8.14% to 66.80 in late trade, Cigna Corp (NYSE:CI) which lost 6.38% to settle at 270.53 and Ceridian HCM Holding Inc (NYSE:CDAY) which was down 5.78% to 68.29 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Phenomex Inc (NASDAQ:CELL) which rose 136.25% to 0.94, BioNexus Gene Lab Corp (NASDAQ:BGLC) which was up 52.78% to settle at 1.10 and Recruiter.Com Group Inc (NASDAQ:RCRT) which gained 37.84% to close at 0.26.
The worst performers were EMCORE Corporation (NASDAQ:EMKR) which was down 37.31% to 0.48 in late trade, Creative Realities Inc (NASDAQ:CREX) which lost 35.81% to settle at 1.90 and Hainan Manaslu Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:HMAC) which was down 33.67% to 5.85 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1985 to 924 and 91 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2324 fell and 1185 advanced, while 116 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.62% to 17.89 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.52% or 9.95 to $1,918.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 0.93% or 0.74 to hit $80.12 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 0.46% or 0.38 to trade at $83.83 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.01% to 1.09, while USD/JPY fell 0.37% to 145.82.
The US Dollar Index Futures was unchanged 0.00% at 103.32.
