Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Technology, Telecoms and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.84%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.78%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.11%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP), which rose 0.64% or 0.37 points to trade at 58.13 at the close. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) added 0.59% or 0.76 points to end at 128.99 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 0.47% or 0.49 points to 103.88 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 9.13% or 12.49 points to trade at 124.37 in late trade. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) declined 2.73% or 1.11 points to end at 39.53 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 2.36% or 1.33 points to 55.07.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which rose 4.55% to 36.57, Estee Lauder Companies Inc (NYSE:EL) which was up 3.05% to settle at 131.98 and Altria Group (NYSE:MO) which gained 2.40% to close at 45.30.
The worst performers were NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which was down 13.82% to 138.01 in late trade, Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) which lost 9.13% to settle at 124.37 and Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which was down 8.54% to 10.28 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Trevena Inc (NASDAQ:TRVN) which rose 119.96% to 1.19, Avalon Globocare Corp (NASDAQ:AVCO) which was up 63.83% to settle at 6.930 and Wheeler Real Estate Investment Trust Inc (NASDAQ:WHLR) which gained 47.27% to close at 1.620.
The worst performers were Oasmia Pharmaceutical AB (NASDAQ:OASM) which was up 0.38% to 2.610 in late trade, iFresh Inc (NASDAQ:IFMK) which lost 14.29% to settle at 1.20 and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which was down 13.82% to 138.01 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1661 to 1359 and 109 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1654 fell and 979 advanced, while 83 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 8.32% to 18.87.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.38% or 4.95 to $1303.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 2.74% or 1.47 to hit $52.22 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 2.71% or 1.67 to trade at $59.92 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.14% to 1.1428, while USD/JPY fell 0.14% to 109.38.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.04% at 95.425.
