Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Technology and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.69%, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.12%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.26%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which rose 2.89% or 4.41 points to trade at 156.85 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) added 1.47% or 4.28 points to end at 294.94 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) was up 1.31% or 0.41 points to 31.60 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V), which lost 2.90% or 6.70 points to trade at 224.58 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 2.54% or 0.77 points to end at 29.51 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) shed 2.18% or 2.00 points to 89.82.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which rose 8.69% to 137.75, Zions Bancorporation (NASDAQ:ZION) which was up 4.63% to settle at 29.39 and Albemarle Corp (NYSE:ALB) which gained 4.63% to close at 216.07.
The worst performers were Las Vegas Sands Corp (NYSE:LVS) which was down 6.35% to 55.71 in late trade, First Republic Bank (OTC:FRCB) which lost 6.13% to settle at 0.34 and Universal Health Services Inc (NYSE:UHS) which was down 6.14% to 126.93 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were CohBar Inc (NASDAQ:CWBR) which rose 223.23% to 5.01, HeartCore Enterprises Inc (NASDAQ:HTCR) which was up 92.19% to settle at 2.46 and Lifecore Biomedical Inc (NASDAQ:LFCR) which gained 50.19% to close at 8.05.
The worst performers were Nanthealth LLC (NASDAQ:NH) which was down 46.64% to 1.35 in late trade, T2 Biosystms Inc (NASDAQ:TTOO) which lost 38.51% to settle at 0.17 and Microvast Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MVST) which was down 36.36% to 1.40 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1795 to 1170 and 110 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1919 fell and 1635 advanced, while 150 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 7.67% to 18.53.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.01% or 0.10 to $1,977.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 1.58% or 1.14 to hit $73.19 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 1.47% or 1.12 to trade at $77.11 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.39% to 1.08, while USD/JPY fell 0.02% to 138.58.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.35% at 103.43.
