Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Telecoms, Utilities and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.67%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.64%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.55%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which rose 2.31% or 1.24 points to trade at 54.94 at the close. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) added 1.35% or 1.90 points to end at 142.97 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) was up 1.18% or 3.44 points to 295.19 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Honeywell International Inc (NASDAQ:HON), which lost 5.69% or 11.85 points to trade at 196.41 in late trade. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) declined 2.47% or 4.15 points to end at 163.60 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 2.30% or 0.79 points to 33.55.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Align Technology Inc (NASDAQ:ALGN) which rose 13.38% to 385.31, Textron Inc (NYSE:TXT) which was up 11.87% to settle at 76.52 and Lam Research Corp (NASDAQ:LRCX) which gained 9.28% to close at 701.95.
The worst performers were eBay Inc (NASDAQ:EBAY) which was down 10.53% to 43.66 in late trade, Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE:CMG) which lost 9.81% to settle at 1,882.98 and Edwards Lifesciences Corp (NYSE:EW) which was down 9.78% to 82.67 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Femasys Inc (NASDAQ:FEMY) which rose 130.77% to 0.84, UroGen Pharma Ltd (NASDAQ:URGN) which was up 98.56% to settle at 17.89 and Greenbrook TMS Inc (NASDAQ:GBNH) which gained 90.75% to close at 0.50.
The worst performers were Mersana Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:MRSN) which was down 72.63% to 1.07 in late trade, Yellow Corp (NASDAQ:YELL) which lost 44.12% to settle at 0.57 and ABVC Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:ABVC) which was down 41.73% to 3.10 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2266 to 725 and 74 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2515 fell and 993 advanced, while 139 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 9.25% to 14.41.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 1.35% or 26.50 to $1,943.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 1.35% or 1.06 to hit $79.84 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 1.08% or 0.89 to trade at $83.45 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.98% to 1.10, while USD/JPY fell 0.53% to 139.47.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.91% at 101.55.
