Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Technology, Industrials and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.57%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.58%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.39%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which rose 2.08% or 1.32 points to trade at 64.81 at the close. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 1.48% or 1.86 points to end at 127.83 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was up 0.92% or 0.48 points to 52.49 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Visa Inc (NYSE:V), which lost 3.01% or 4.23 points to trade at 136.48 in late trade. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) declined 2.89% or 3.00 points to end at 100.85 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) shed 2.66% or 9.59 points to 351.06.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which rose 5.90% to 4.670, Franklin Resources Inc (NYSE:BEN) which was up 5.73% to settle at 34.31 and Invesco Plc (NYSE:IVZ) which gained 5.35% to close at 27.36.
The worst performers were Tyson Foods Inc (NYSE:TSN) which was down 7.61% to 58.72 in late trade, Sysco Corporation (NYSE:SYY) which lost 6.73% to settle at 66.67 and Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which was down 5.70% to 334.96 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were SSLJ.com Ltd Class A (NASDAQ:SSLJ) which rose 61.48% to 2.1800, ARCA Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:ABIO) which was up 40.86% to settle at 0.817 and MYnd Analytics Inc (NASDAQ:MYND) which gained 33.81% to close at 1.86.
The worst performers were Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc (NASDAQ:HMNY) which was down 60.00% to 0.800 in late trade, iFresh Inc (NASDAQ:IFMK) which lost 34.18% to settle at 2.60 and Wilhelmina (NASDAQ:WHLM) which was down 23.97% to 6.25 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1627 to 1399 and 132 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1674 fell and 888 advanced, while 136 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 9.52% to 14.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.22% or 2.70 to $1220.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 1.95% or 1.34 to hit $70.03 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 0.80% or 0.60 to trade at $75.36 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.40% to 1.1705, while USD/JPY rose 0.04% to 111.08.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.34% at 94.15.
