Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.50%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.55%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.42%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which rose 6.31% or 10.52 points to trade at 177.15 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) added 4.06% or 2.23 points to end at 57.21 and United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) was up 2.86% or 3.62 points to 130.02 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 7.56% or 9.73 points to trade at 118.98 in late trade. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) declined 4.38% or 8.81 points to end at 192.55 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 3.25% or 3.81 points to 113.40.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Cadence Design Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CDNS) which rose 15.37% to 46.85, PulteGroup Inc (NYSE:PHM) which was up 7.28% to settle at 22.40 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) which gained 6.31% to close at 177.15.
The worst performers were DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH) which was down 8.34% to 31.77 in late trade, Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) which lost 7.56% to settle at 118.98 and Quest Diagnostics Incorporated (NYSE:DGX) which was down 6.22% to 95.22 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Cinedigm Corp (NASDAQ:CIDM) which rose 53.93% to 1.3700, Titan Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:TTNP) which was up 36.36% to settle at 0.4800 and Realm Therapeutics PLC ADR (NASDAQ:RLM) which gained 32.07% to close at 2.86.
The worst performers were Selecta Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:SELB) which was down 33.36% to 8.87 in late trade, Astec Industries Inc (NASDAQ:ASTE) which lost 24.88% to settle at 35.51 and One Horizon Group Inc (NASDAQ:OHGI) which was down 22.31% to 0.2618 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2116 to 982 and 69 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1761 fell and 889 advanced, while 74 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.45% to 20.71.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.02% or 12.40 to $1233.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 4.15% or 2.87 to hit $66.30 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 4.32% or 3.45 to trade at $76.38 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.06% to 1.1472, while USD/JPY fell 0.34% to 112.43.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.07% at 95.68.
