Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Telecoms, Oil & Gas and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.48%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.47%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.52%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 2.85% or 1.52 points to trade at 54.94 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) added 1.29% or 3.03 points to end at 237.68 and Visa Inc (NYSE:V) was up 1.00% or 1.08 points to 109.49 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 2.85% or 7.58 points to trade at 258.42 in late trade. General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) declined 1.78% or 0.39 points to end at 21.50 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) shed 1.53% or 2.38 points to 153.50.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were FLIR Systems Inc (NASDAQ:FLIR) which rose 5.97% to 46.52, Anthem Inc (NYSE:ANTM) which was up 5.36% to settle at 205.71 and Avery Dennison Corporation (NYSE:AVY) which gained 5.20% to close at 104.05.
The worst performers were Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE:CMG) which was down 14.58% to 277.01 in late trade, Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which lost 13.47% to settle at 12.330 and Alaska Air Group Inc (NYSE:ALK) which was down 13.19% to 68.92 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Roka Bioscience Inc (NASDAQ:ROKA) which rose 54.63% to 1.6700, The Bon-Ton Stores Inc (NASDAQ:BONT) which was up 37.08% to settle at 0.838 and Top Ships Inc (NASDAQ:TOPS) which gained 31.96% to close at 0.4950.
The worst performers were Atossa Genetics Inc (NASDAQ:ATOS) which was down 30.51% to 0.8478 in late trade, Acadia Healthcare Company Inc (NASDAQ:ACHC) which lost 25.93% to settle at 32.68 and Aytu BioScience Inc (NASDAQ:AYTU) which was down 24.77% to 3.4681 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2300 to 820 and 107 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1637 fell and 866 advanced, while 144 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.81% to 11.25 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.04% or 0.54 to $1278.84 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 0.48% or 0.25 to hit $52.22 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 0.21% or 0.12 to trade at $58.45 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.37% to 1.1804, while USD/JPY fell 0.16% to 113.73.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.26% at 93.59.
