Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Healthcare, Telecoms and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.47%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.22%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.03%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which rose 3.24% or 5.09 points to trade at 161.99 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 2.84% or 5.45 points to end at 197.21 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) was up 2.22% or 1.21 points to 55.62 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which lost 1.93% or 2.88 points to trade at 146.45 in late trade. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 1.70% or 5.31 points to end at 306.90 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) shed 1.61% or 8.77 points to 535.80.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL) which rose 6.95% to 31.22, Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which was up 6.90% to settle at 73.79 and Schlumberger NV (NYSE:SLB) which gained 6.61% to close at 39.36.
The worst performers were Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) which was down 7.32% to 39.86 in late trade, Pool Corporation (NASDAQ:POOL) which lost 3.72% to settle at 360.63 and Healthpeak Properties Inc (NYSE:PEAK) which was down 3.16% to 26.93 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Reviva Pharmaceuticals Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:RVPH) which rose 53.04% to 1.49, Windtree Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:WINT) which was up 52.21% to settle at 0.70 and China Index Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:CIH) which gained 42.86% to close at 1.00.
The worst performers were WeTrade Group Inc (NASDAQ:WETG) which was down 39.02% to 3.22 in late trade, Bright Minds Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:DRUG) which lost 38.43% to settle at 1.33 and Golden Sun Education Group Ltd (NASDAQ:GSUN) which was down 38.06% to 21.99 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1559 to 1540 and 132 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1897 rose and 1846 declined, while 197 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.30% to 24.11.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.71% or 12.35 to $1,760.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 3.60% or 3.25 to hit $93.61 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 3.79% or 3.66 to trade at $100.14 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.28% to 1.00, while USD/JPY fell 0.52% to 136.76.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.47% at 108.47.
