Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Telecoms, Consumer Goods and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.33%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.60%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.80%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which rose 1.55% or 0.54 points to trade at 35.37 at the close. Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) added 0.87% or 2.03 points to end at 234.60 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was up 0.65% or 1.05 points to 163.58 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which lost 3.65% or 1.41 points to trade at 37.19 in late trade. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) declined 3.04% or 1.46 points to end at 46.58 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) shed 1.81% or 3.31 points to 179.26.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Snap-On Inc (NYSE:SNA) which rose 7.97% to 258.89, Lam Research Corp (NASDAQ:LRCX) which was up 7.23% to settle at 526.52 and DR Horton Inc (NYSE:DHI) which gained 5.64% to close at 107.60.
The worst performers were SVB Financial Group (OTC:SIVBQ) which was down 18.10% to 0.76 in late trade, Signature Bank (OTC:SBNY) which lost 15.98% to settle at 0.16 and AT&T Inc (NYSE:T) which was down 10.41% to 17.65 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Augmedix Inc (NASDAQ:AUGX) which rose 88.89% to 3.40, United Insurance Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:UIHC) which was up 62.42% to settle at 2.68 and Cns Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:CNSP) which gained 48.02% to close at 2.62.
The worst performers were Windtree Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:WINT) which was down 57.68% to 2.37 in late trade, Bed Bath & Beyond Inc (NASDAQ:BBBY) which lost 35.34% to settle at 0.30 and Via Renewables Inc (NASDAQ:VIA) which was down 27.75% to 13.25 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1891 to 1068 and 112 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2326 fell and 1255 advanced, while 183 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 4.31% to 17.17.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.48% or 9.60 to $2,016.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 2.65% or 2.10 to hit $77.14 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 2.78% or 2.31 to trade at $80.81 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.12% to 1.10, while USD/JPY fell 0.33% to 134.24.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.13% at 101.53.
