Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Industrials, Utilities and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.05%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.03%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.01%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which rose 1.22% or 1.54 points to trade at 127.28 at the close. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) added 1.22% or 0.69 points to end at 57.11 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was up 1.21% or 0.68 points to 56.83 in late trade.
Biggest losers included United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX), which lost 3.96% or 5.07 points to trade at 122.94 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 1.45% or 1.99 points to end at 135.08 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) shed 1.26% or 4.47 points to 349.33.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Signet Jewelers Ltd (NYSE:SIG) which rose 3.72% to 19.81, Albemarle Corp (NYSE:ALB) which was up 3.52% to settle at 73.43 and Schlumberger NV (NYSE:SLB) which gained 3.44% to close at 36.69.
The worst performers were Raytheon Company (NYSE:RTN) which was down 5.11% to 177.62 in late trade, L3 Technologies Inc (NYSE:LLL) which lost 4.39% to settle at 243.32 and Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) which was down 4.28% to 188.17 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Jaguar Health Inc (NASDAQ:JAGX) which rose 35.92% to 10.140, China Techfaith Wireless Communication Technology Ltd (NASDAQ:CNTF) which was up 35.91% to settle at 0.5299 and ContraVir Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:CTRV) which gained 35.71% to close at 9.5000.
The worst performers were Insys Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:INSY) which was down 77.67% to 0.14 in late trade, Legacy Reserves Inc (NASDAQ:LGCY) which lost 58.27% to settle at 0.11 and Cymabay Therapeu (NASDAQ:CBAY) which was down 45.45% to 6.050 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1514 to 1456 and 107 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1476 fell and 1180 advanced, while 87 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.31% to 15.99.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.10% or 1.35 to $1330.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 0.30% or 0.16 to hit $53.10 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.05% or 0.03 to trade at $62.09 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.06% to 1.1336, while USD/JPY rose 0.04% to 108.54.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.05% at 96.662.
